AI’s Role in Talent Assessment: Look Before You Leap

Workplace Application: Attendees will learn about AI-based applications within the talent assessment arena as well as how to critically evaluate such offerings against relevant professional standards and organizational strategy and goals.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform the talent assessment landscape, yet, should perhaps come with a warning label. Like all powerful tools, AI offers great promise that must be used wisely. Following an overview of AI’s current and potential applications in talent assessment, this session will arm participants with the information needed to critically evaluate such applications—with a specific focus on the legal and ethical standards that AI-based solutions must meet to be considered reliable, valid and consistent with exemplary professional practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify AI fundamentals, including how AI-based approaches work and where they can help address a variety of talent assessment challenges.
  • Understand and apply a comprehensive set of criteria for evaluating AI-based approaches to talent assessment that includes all relevant legal, professional, and ethical standards.
  • Identify concrete steps that an organization can take to implement AI-based solutions within its talent assessment processes, including the technological, structural, and communication-related factors that must be addressed during the implementation process.

Dr. David Dorsey currently serves as a Vice President at the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO). Prior to joining HumRRO, Dr. Dorsey was a senior executive in the U.S. Department of Defense, where he served as the Chief of Organizational Effectiveness and Workforce Research and as a Senior Data Scientist. Dr. Dorsey has produced over 70 professional book chapters, articles, and presentations. For his overall contributions to the field, Dr. Dorsey was elected a Fellow by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He is the recipient of two major research awards (including one for work related to Artificial Intelligence) and an award for being a top leader in government. Dr. Dorsey received his PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology with a graduate minor in Computer Science from the University of South Florida.
