What's Trending in HR? An Inside Look into SHRM's Ask an Advisor Service and Member Questions!

Attendees will learn about SHRM's Ask an Advisor service, the trending HR topics and questions received by members and our Advisors' answers.

In this session, Amber Clayton, Senior Director of Knowledge Center Operations, shares information about one of SHRM's most popular member benefits, the Ask an Advisor service. Amber will be joined by Knowledge Advisors to discuss trending HR topics and questions received by members and answers provided by advisors, giving the audience an inside look into how the service can benefit them in their current roles and elevate the HR profession.

Attendees will walk away with guidance on HR's trending topics such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), compensation-related questions like overtime, independent contractors and wage deductions, disability accommodations, terminations and compliance with employment laws. They'll hear about upcoming laws and what to pay attention to in the near future. They'll also walk away with information about the benefit of using the Knowledge Center's Ask an Advisor service. In addition, this will be interactive and audience members will be able to ask the Knowledge Advisors HR questions and receive on-the-spot answers.

Amber Clayton is the Senior Director of Knowledge Center Operations at SHRM.  Amber leads a team of HR experts who field an average of 60,000 HR-related inquiries from members a year.  She is frequently sought after as a speaker and expert for webinars, conferences, and media interviews.  Amber co-hosts a podcast called Honest HR.  She is SHRM-certified with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore.  She also holds specialty credentials in California law, inclusive workplace culture, and workplace investigations.  Prior to joining SHRM in 2011, she had years of HR experience in healthcare and retail.

Liz Petersen, SHRM-SCP, is the Quality Manager for the HR Knowledge Center at SHRM.  Prior to this role, she worked as a SHRM HR Knowledge Advisor.  Liz has a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in Industrial/Organizational Psychology with a Business minor.  She has a master’s degree from University of Maryland University College in Human Resource Management. 

Liz has over 25 years of HR experience and the SHRM Senior Professional Certification.  Prior to SHRM, Liz worked as an Outsourced HR Manager for several small and medium sized organizations in multiple industries including technology, engineering, hospitality, retail, service, construction, healthcare, manufacturing, etc. She also worked as in-house HR Manager and Director in the manufacturing industry.

Liz is lives in Oceanside, CA with her husband.  In her free time, Liz is discovering a love for painting, hacking away on golf courses, doing anything water or beach related, watching Seahawk and Steeler football, and trying to earn a green thumb.
