We all think we make rational decisions based on sound evidence. If this is true, why aren't we all batting 1000?  In this session, we will explore what it means to truly be an evidence-based manager.  We will examine several research studies on decision making in sports and apply them to HR and organizational processes.  Learn how you can advocate for the use of techniques to counter common biases in group decision-making and help develop the game plan that will make your organization a champion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain and justify the importance of HR being an evidence-based profession.
  • Understand what constitutes sound evidence for organizational decision making.
  • Learn practical measures to prevent biases in group decision making.

Bethany Adams has more than 15 years of experience in HR and education.  She began her career working in learning & development and human resources in the restaurant and retail industries. She has experience in both small, privately-owned businesses and large, Fortune 500 organizations. Bethany holds a BA in Psychology, MA in Organizational Management, the SHRM-SCP certification, and is a Certified Genos International Emotional Intelligence Practitioner. She currently teaches at Villanova University in the Graduate Programs in HR Development.  Bethany has spoken at a variety of conferences throughout the country and leads corporate training on topics including emotional intelligence, DEI, and strategic HR.  Bethany hosts an HR podcast called HR Tea.

Gerry Brandon, PhD, SPHR, SHRM-SCP is a Teaching Professor and the Director of the Graduate Program in HR Development at Villanova University. He received a PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Penn State, and a BA in Psychology from Franklin & Marshall College. He is a Fellow with the Center for Evidence-Based Management and holds the SHRM specialty certificate in People Analytics. Previously, he served for over 17 years as a senior HR manager while working for the Pennsylvania State Education Association. He taught at Gettysburg College in Organization and Management Studies for two years prior to joining Villanova in 2015.
