An increasing number of employees and customers want to bring their animals with them to work, shop or dine. "Service animals" must be allowed under most circumstances, but which types of animals qualify and how do they become certified? What about the rights of others in the workforce?  This sessions addresses current federal and state laws governing service and assistive animals.

James J. McDonald, Jr. is managing partner of the Irvine, California office of Fisher & Phillips LLP where he advises and represents employers in all aspects of labor and employment law. He is author of California Employment Law: An Employer’s Guide, which is published annually by SHRM. He has taught labor and employment law in the University of California, Irvine’s Human Resources Management program for 16 years. He is a cum laude law graduate of Georgetown University and he holds both the SHRM-SCP and the SPHR certifications.
