HR 101 for Departments of One/Small Business

The primary application of this session is to give a framework for building a successful HR foundation for any organization, but especially for those practitioners who are new to HR and wear multiple hats in their daily duties.

Are you new to HR? Have the HR duties of your organization fallen into your lap? Not sure where to start? This session is for you! For those who are new to Human Resources, those who have unexpectedly found themselves working in HR, those who are departments of one or support a small business - we are going to take a deep dive into the where and how to get started with HR and to build a framework for success.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify challenges and solutions unique to HR in small business.
  • Gain a detailed framework of how to create a solid HR foundation.
  • Obtain resources for building on the foundation and creating a people-first culture.

Christie Engler has been a Human Resources practitioner for 20 years with a focus on small businesses. 

Christie is dedicated to advancing the HR profession.  She has spoken at various HR conferences, and she writes a blog entitled ‘Living in the Gray’ designed to inspire HR professionals.  Christie contributed to the book, ‘People Fusion’, which was published in January 2023. 

Christie is a graduate of The Ohio State University and the Keller Graduate School of Management.  She holds the SPHR and SHRM-CP certifications. 

Christie lives in the Columbus, Ohio area with her husband and two daughters.  She is a fanatic of Ohio State football and Orangetheory Fitness.
