Case Study: Prudential Financial’s International Leadership Development Strategy

Workplace Application: Learn to create an international leadership development strategy that is both globally consistent yet tailored for local talent needs.

Using Prudential Financial as a case study, this session will examine the challenges in preparing leaders for rapid international growth. We will review the company’s international leadership development strategy and how it was implemented in the company’s operations in Japan, which now represent close to 50% of the company’s 50,000 employees. The presenters will analyze the importance of having a global leadership development framework that allows for local flexibility and ownership. You will learn how to develop a holistic talent development strategy by determining future competency requirements, highlighting leadership strengths/gaps and identifying training needs.

John Hom is currently Vice President and Head of the Talent Consulting team, which is part of the Prudential’s Talent Organization.  The team is focused on enhancing results by working with senior leaders on large-scale transformation projects from across the US and International Businesses and Corporate Functions.  Previously, he was the Senior Vice President of Talent Management at Merrill Lynch /Bank of America where he was responsible for talent management for multiple functions including Global Risk Management, Global Research, Global Operations and the Chief Financial Office representing 11,000 employees globally. 

Prior to Merrill Lynch, John was a senior consultant at the Hay Group, a global human resources consulting firm.  At Hay, he specialized in improving sales force effectiveness.  In this capacity, he consulted to sales organizations at Fortune 500 companies across multiple industries including pharmaceuticals, financial services and telecommunications. 

John also worked at Salomon Brothers in both its Strategy Consulting team and Mergers and Acquisition group.  In these roles, he worked extensively with different business unites on revenue-generating projects including developing the company’s pan-Latin American strategy and identifying long-term equity investments.  He also held various operational roles at Lehman Brothers and Chase Manhattan Bank. 

John graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.  He also holds a Masters in Business Administration in Finance and International Business Management from New York University.  He currently serves on the National Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of the USA and is also the Chair of its Executive Compensation Committee.  John lives in South Orange, New Jersey with his wife, Linda, and two children, Sydnie and Matthew.

Dr. Nakashima is pursuing dual careers in business and teaching.

After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he joined Fujitsu in 1984 and w as assigned to HR. After 10 years of experience in the one of the most ICT com panies, he worked for three different U.S. companies, Levi Strauss, GM and Gap  as HR Professional.

In 2005, he was hired by Rakuten as the head of HR where he introduced perform ance based HR policies and practices to help them to globalize their businesse s.

Since 2007, he has worked for the U.S. based financial companies as the Head o f HR and managed the organizational development after the financial crisis. In  2010, he joined Giblartar Life Insurance, one of the Prudential companies in Japan.  He was involved in the one of the biggest M&A project in Japan, which Prudential acquired two life insurance companies from AIG.

He also started to his teaching career in 2004 in several graduate schools in Japan, and joined Chuo Business School in 2008. He earned MBA from University of Michigan and PhD. from Chuo University.
