Retirement Plan Management: Choosing a Qualified Default Investment Alternative (QDIA)

2014 Annual Conference
Workplace Application: This session will provide an overview of the QDIA provision of the Pension Protection Act as well as a practical process for choosing and monitoring your plan’s QDIA.

As more employers adopt automatic enrollment for 401k plans, choosing and monitoring the QDIA has become a critical fiduciary decision. This session will lay out some practical guidelines for selecting and reviewing an appropriate default investment alternative. Using the recent Department of Labor guidelines, a practical approach for evaluating the investment philosophy, glidepath structure, investment expenses and vehicle structure will be outlined. The differences between target date, managed accounts, and balanced accounts will also be discussed as well as when it is prudent to choose one over the other.
